Lake Naivasha - Sunday 17th Jan

Up early today to go to the Green Crater walk at 7am with our local guide Simon. First we did the Crater Lake Game Sanctuary which is a "game walking" park.

It has over 170 species of birds plus giraffes, zebras, aardvarks ( Jo fell into one of their burrowing holes whilst she was looking at several others) and lots of other wildlife plus also plus the odd Buffalo and Hippo at night. The zebras were around the local watering hole on the start of the walk.

Came across a big tower of giraffe towards the end of the couple hour walk

Then it was off for short drive to the rim of the crater. The tiny jade-green crater are is held in high regard by the local Massai, who even believe that it helps soothe ailing cattle. The volcanic crater is also home to Colobus monkeys and flamingos .

Back to the camp ground for a early lunch with a couple of hours of downtime. Being a Sunday all the locals were out in their church gear with some very interesting get ups.

Post an afternoon rain shower we drove a few km's down the road to Elsamere Lodge ,the original home of Joy Adams of Born Free fame sits in a great location, views across the lawns to Lake Naivasha, Kenya.  Elsamere is the former home of the late Joy Adamson who, together with her husband George Adamson, became world famous for their pioneering conservation work and relationship with the lioness Elsa, as told in her best-selling book and subsequent film, ‘Born Free’ and she did much of her writing at Elsamere up until her murder in 1980. George was also killed by poachers and his Landrover is now on display.

We enjoyed high tea then went for a walk through the museum and then around the gardens.

We arrived back home to pre dinner drinks and charcoal fired pizzas by Amanda followed by some after dinner drinks and music then retired about 9pm to bed.
