Rainbow River lodge,Divundu to Meteorite Camp , Grootfontein - Sunday 21 Feb

We were packed and ready to go by 7 am so slipped up to the bar to pay my bill of a whole AUD$15 for 7 beers and 2 spirits!!- could stay here a while in Namibia I reckon. We had 315 kms today to travel which would take about 5 to 6 hours on tar sealed straight road so have to be careful about getting tried.

The roadside specials today were mainly firewood and fence posts for their properties with a few pottery and wood carving places as well
We stopped for a quick break after about 2 hours into the trip just short of Rundu at a fuel stop for some food then on the way out of town there was a big crowd and plenty of police gathered at a truck roll. On closer inspection we found a beer truck had rolled and the area was taped off to prevent the locals having a beer fun run.

We arrived at the animal disease check point for the fruit ,meat and diary inspection with the spraying of the car tyres for foot and mouth. Here's the dude coming to spray Steph.
Had to get out to open the back door for the inspector to see if we had any hidden contraband and then proceeded through the check police check point and towards Grootfontein where you could see the change in house styles now made out of roofing iron and not mud.

Then for a stop off at the Pick and Pay supermarket then about 12 kms to Hobas Meteorite along a gravel road with a warning sign for Kudu
It's not uncommon for them to land on your bonnet or through your windscreen as they are very good jumpers especially across roads.A further warning sign when we got to the meteorite site

The Hoba Meteorite was discovered in 1920 by Jacobus Hermanns Brit at the Hoba Farm west of Grootfontein in northern Namibian which forms the edge of the extensive Kalahari plan . The meteorite is the largest known in the world and weights 50 tonnes,is almost 3m long and up to 1 metre thick. According to scientific calculations it struck earth 80,000 years ago.It consists of approx 82%iron,16%nickel and 1 % cobalt and other trace elements.

We only had a couple of kms to the Meteorite Camp site which is on a working corn farm and were set up in no time with some tent helpers assisting me

They were also keen to join Jo for her afternoon nap
Had lots of space with a excellent breeze to cool down under the shade

We had Springbok neck for dinner in the Potlies
